The eighth annual Hillsdale Summer Peace and Music Festival, put on by the Hillsdale County Coalition for Peace and Justice, will be Saturday August 15th in Carl Fast Park in Jonesville Michigan from noon till 6pm.

The theme for the 2009 PeaceFest in August is What can you do to promote peace. In preparation for this event we will be sharing some ideas on what individuals can do for peace.

Inform Yourself

If you want to promote peace you need to inform yourself so you can educate your family and friends.Tower of Babel is a good source of compiled news links. Put it in your bookmarks and spend some time there every time you are on the internet.

Participate in Events

“If you go to one demonstration and then go home, that’s something, but the people in power can live with that. What they can’t live with is sustained pressure that keeps building, organizations that keep doing things, people that keep learning lessons from the last time and doing it better the next time.” Noam Chomsky

Ten Commandments for Changing the World

    1. You Gotta Believe
Have hope, passion and confidence that valuable change can and does happen because individuals take bold initiative.

    2. Challenge Authority
Don’t be afraid to question authority. Authority should be earned, not appointed. The “experts” are often proven wrong (they used to believe that the earth was flat!). You don’t have to be an expert to have a valuable opinion or to speak out on an issue.

    3. Know the System
The system perpetuates itself. Use the tools you have - the telephone is the most underrated. The internet can be of great value for research as well. Learn how decisions are made. How is the bureaucracy structured? Who are the key players? What do they look like? Where do they eat lunch? Go there and talk with them. Get to know their executive assistants. Attend public meetings.

    4. Take Action
Do something - anything is better than nothing. Bounce your idea around with friends, and then act. Start small, but think big. Organize public events. Distribute handbills. Involve youth. It’s easier to ask for forgiveness after the fact rather than to ask for permission. Just do it! Be flexible. Roll with the punches and allow yourself to change tactics mid-stream. Think laterally. Don’t get hung-up on money matters; some of the best actions have no budget.

    5. Use the media
Letters to the Editor of your local newspaper are read by thousands. Stage a dramatic event and invite the media - they love an event that gives them an interesting angle or good photo. Bypass the mainstream media with email and the world wide web to get the word out about your issue and to network.

    6. Build Alliances
Seek out your common allies such as other community associations, seniors, youth groups, labor, businesses, etc. and work with them to establish support. The system wins through Divide and Conquer, so do the opposite! Network ideas, expertise and issues through email lists. Celebrate your successes with others.

    7. Apply Constant Pressure
Persevere - it drives those in power crazy. Be as creative as possible in getting your perspective heard. Use the media, phone your politicians, send letters and faxes with graphics and images. Be concise. Bend the Administration’s ear when you attend public meetings. Take notes. Ask specific questions, and give a deadline for when you expect a response. Stay in their faces.

    8. Teach Alternatives
Propose and articulate intelligent alternatives to the status quo. Inspire people with well thought out, attractive visions of how things can be better. Use actual examples, what’s been tried, where and how it works. Do your homework, get the word out, create visual representations. Be positive and hopeful.

    9. Learn From your Mistakes
You’re gonna make mistakes; we all do. Critique - in a positive way - yourself, the movement, and the opposition. What works, and why? What isn’t working? What do people really enjoy doing, and do more of that.

    10. Take Care of Yourself and Each Other
Maintain balance. Eat well and get regular exercise. Avoid burn-out by delegating tasks, sharing responsibility, and maintaining an open process. Be sensitive to your comrades. Have fun. As much as possible, surround yourself with others (both at work and at play) who share your vision so you can build camaraderie, solidarity and support. Enjoy yourself, and nourish your sense of humour. Remember: you’re not alone!

Peacefest went really well. Veggies for Peace were wonderful as well, and the flowers were great . Next year we should promote the flowers as well as the veggies. Liese did nails and Katja and Liese gave massages, they were very popular. Thor did an art installation piece (which can be seen at the Volume 1 bookstore, post festival) the whole day which came out great, he’s amazing. Michigan Peace Works had a table with their new director, as well all the Moratorium on Foreclosures group, so that was good for diverse political views. It rained a little bit a few times, but passed over pretty quick, not enough for anyone to have to run for it. The crowd could have been larger, but we recognize opposing American Empire is not a subject that brings out crowds of curious folk, yet.
Anyone interested in sharing thoughts about the fest should show up at the Monday night movie at the Hillsdale Public Library for our 7pm showing of Persepolis. To view 2008 Peacefest pictures click on link below.

Get ready to raise your voice against American Empire at the annual Hillsdale Coalition for Peace and Justice’s annual Peacefest. Like the last couple of years the Peacefest will be in Fast Park in Jonesville, Michigan conveniently located at the intersection of US 12 and M99. We will have music, anti-empire displays, anti-war displays, food, drink (non-alcoholic of course), popcorn. Vendors, politicians, and activists will have tables set up with information and things to buy. Besides the music there will be events for children and the famous “Veggies for Peace”. Veggies for Peace is our primary funding resource for holding the Peacefest every year so support our event by trading some American greenbacks for some garden greens, yellows, and reds (all locally grown produce by our members in their home gardens).

Peacefest starts at noon and ends at 5pm. There will be a potluck afterglo in the park. Anyone is welcome to bring a passing dish, help us clean up and enjoy some stimulating conversation. We have access to a large cooler at the park to refrigerate your potluck goodies. Just ask a coalition member when you arrive where to take your food.
If you would like to set up a table there is still time to call or email Aimee at (517) 437-2228. She will know if we have room; plan on providing your own table.

Interested groups or individuals can set up tables/booths around 10:00 AM and start talking/selling to participants as they arrive for the noon opening. The only thing we ask of participants is that they be peace/alternative oriented and that they let us know if they plan to be there. If you are interested in having a table or booth e-mail, call, or stop in and talk to us. Check out the contact link for details, or better yet come to one of our meetings. We meet the last Thursday of the month (March meeting is the 27th), at Volume 1 Bookstore in Hillsdale at 7pm.

Regular attendees have probably noticed that, over the years, we have gone more and more to an event that is full of music and fun with more of a party than a protest atmosphere. Getting speakers has been challenging and currently we have no one committed. We are open to suggestions. Although we may have no or few speakers, the theme for this year’s festival is “The Cost Of Empire.” Our displays will offer vivid and detailed illustrations of the extent of America’s worldwide military presence and what has been lost in the ongoing struggle for empire.

DETROIT — A U.S. district judge ruled Thursday that the city of Ferndale violated the First Amendment right to free speech when it punished anti-war protesters on Woodward and drivers who honked to support them.

District Judge Denise Page Hood, who read her opinion from her Detroit bench, said the city failed to show the honking was excessive or posed a safety hazard. Most importantly, the honks’ “message of peace” — just as that of the protesters — is protected by the U.S. Constitution.

“For Ferndale to now claim that a honk is simply a honk is disingenuous,” she said.

Nancy Goedert, a 74-year-old Ferndale resident and member of the activist group Raging Grannies, was delighted with the ruling and said she would return to Woodward and Nine Mile, where an anti-war vigil has been held every Monday since 2002. She was ticketed in June for holding a sign that read “HONK FOR PEACE.”

“This time we won’t have to put the little line on top that says, ‘Ferndale cops say don’t,’” she said.

The ruling is significant because Ferndale is the first city in Michigan to prosecute car honking in support of a demonstration, said Michael Steinberg, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, which filed the lawsuit against the city in April on behalf of five protesters and motorists.

“We believe that with this opinion, it will be the last,” he said. “Honking is a time-honored means of political expression in Michigan.”

After the ACLU intervened, the city dropped the charges.

In the summer of 2006, Ferndale began ticketing or arresting protesters for disturbing the peace. City police also ticketed a honking motorist, saying a city ordinance and state law limits motorists to honking only to warn others of danger.

City Attorney Dan Christ said Ferndale will await the judge’s written opinion, expected within days, before deciding what to do next. In the meantime, city authorities will not interfere with the protests, he said.

“Certainly the city is not going to do anything against the court’s ruling,” Christ said.

Another court date will be scheduled, when the judge could award the plaintiffs nominal damages and attorney fees.

We will be meeting having our first meeting of 2008 on the last Thursday of the month, which happens to fall on the last day of January, the 31st. This will be a good time to start out the new year right and get involved locally in our fight for peace and justice. The meeting is at 7pm at Volume 1 Bookstore at 98 Broad St. in beautiful downtown Hillsdale (next to Salvation Army). Everyone is welcome.

Saturday between noon and 1pm we will be at our usual location in front of the Courthouse reminding everyone that we are still involved in an illegal, immoral and expensive war in Iraq. Join us, and freeze for one hour in solidarity with the misery the Iraqi people experience everyday.
